• "Medieval pilgrims traveling on the Via Francigena would have first seen San Gimignano's tall towers from afar, before entering the town. It was (and still is) an important relay point on the pilgrimage route to Rome. Many years ago, when I first visited San Gimignano, I was astonished by a lady walking through the town center with her donkey; her shoes were covered by dust, and her skin was darkened by the Tuscany sun. One step by one step, slowly, she would walk to Rome." -Chenyu Cheng
